Sai Baba bed in Dwarkamai

At Dwarkamai, one can still see the place where the strange bed of Sai Baba was hung - it was hardly a bed, more of a swing / jhoola hung from the celing between the Dhuni and the Nimbar. All devotees of Sai Baba were curious about this bow shaped bed. In Dwarkamai, Sai Baba would sleep on a wooden plank, which was like a narrow strip, wide as two poles, as tall as him. It was difficult to comprehend how he slept on it, considering the narrowness of the berth, which was like a plank the width of one's palm. Sai tied both ends of the plank with rags and pretty much hung it, like a jhoola from the roof of the mosque. Since the mosque walls and ceiling was dilapidated and almost in ruins, the jhoola hung awkwardly like a bow shaped object. This narrow berth was given to Sai Baba by Nana Saheb Dengle.  This image of Sai - sitting in concentration on that plank or sleeping on it, with diyas at the foot of this bed and at the head of the plank - is a picture that most people...

Sai Baba’s Bheeksha Practice

From his first day in Shirdi till his last, Sai Baba took Bheeksha. Rarely, when he couldn’t go himself, he would send someone else in his place to collect alms. In 1916, Sai Baba fulfilled Prof. G. G. Narke’s innermost desire by allowing him to collect bheeksha on his behalf. Baba only collected Bheeksha from five houses which were very close to Dwarakamai and he never went inside any of the houses. He always started his Bheeksha rounds at 8 in the morning. He collected all the dry foods like chapati, rice, etc. in a cloth and all the liquids in a metal mug. Baba’s first stop would be the houses of Sakharam Shelke and Vaman Rao Gondkar. Since these houses were opposite to each other, he would stand in the narrow lane seperating them and would call out “Oh, Lassie, give me a piece of Bread”. After receiving Bheeksha he would proceed to Bayyaji’s House. On the way to Bayyaji’s house Baba would stop at a hillock and feed the birds and dogs. In memory of this kind act, Padukas w...

Why we throw gulaal in the air on Holi

Why is Holi celebrated with colours and gulaal? What is the link between Holika dehen and colourful gulaal holi. Holika, commonly called Holi is a Indian festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring season. People celebrate Holi by throwing coloured powder in the air and at each other. Entrances to houses are decorated with colorful Rangoli pattems. Celebrated on Saawan month purnima, Holi brings families together over Holika dehen and the colourful big Holi day. Essentially, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil. According to Indian mythology a demonic king by the name of Hiranya Kasyapu once ruled in ancient India. He was cruel and tyrannical. Everyone feared him except for his son Pralhad. Pralhad was an ardent devotee of Vishnu, who was the arch enemy of the demon race known as Rakshasas. As punishment Pralhad was ordered to embrace a red hot pole. But, he was unscathed. Pralhad was then made to jump off a steep cliff, but he came back safe. Hir...
