Sai Baba’s Bheeksha Practice

From his first day in Shirdi till his last, Sai Baba took Bheeksha. Rarely, when he couldn’t go himself, he would send someone else in his place to collect alms. In 1916, Sai Baba fulfilled Prof. G. G. Narke’s innermost desire by allowing him to collect bheeksha on his behalf. Baba only collected Bheeksha from five houses which were very close to Dwarakamai and he never went inside any of the houses. He always started his Bheeksha rounds at 8 in the morning. He collected all the dry foods like chapati, rice, etc. in a cloth and all the liquids in a metal mug. Baba’s first stop would be the houses of Sakharam Shelke and Vaman Rao Gondkar. Since these houses were opposite to each other, he would stand in the narrow lane seperating them and would call out “Oh, Lassie, give me a piece of Bread”. After receiving Bheeksha he would proceed to Bayyaji’s House. On the way to Bayyaji’s house Baba would stop at a hillock and feed the birds and dogs. In memory of this kind act, Padukas w...

Why we throw gulaal in the air on Holi

Why is Holi celebrated with colours and gulaal? What is the link between Holika dehen and colourful gulaal holi. Holika, commonly called Holi is a Indian festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring season. People celebrate Holi by throwing coloured powder in the air and at each other. Entrances to houses are decorated with colorful Rangoli pattems. Celebrated on Saawan month purnima, Holi brings families together over Holika dehen and the colourful big Holi day. Essentially, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil. According to Indian mythology a demonic king by the name of Hiranya Kasyapu once ruled in ancient India. He was cruel and tyrannical. Everyone feared him except for his son Pralhad. Pralhad was an ardent devotee of Vishnu, who was the arch enemy of the demon race known as Rakshasas. As punishment Pralhad was ordered to embrace a red hot pole. But, he was unscathed. Pralhad was then made to jump off a steep cliff, but he came back safe. Hir...

When Sai Baba ate in Hemadpant's home

Sai Baba appears to one of his ardent devotees partaking a meal in his house. When Baba sends a message to a devotee, the universe conspires to fulfill it, such is the power of the Guru. Hemadpant had a vision on the Holi full moon morning of the year 1917. He dreamt that Sai Baba, dressed like a Sanyaasi, woke him up from his sleep to let him know that that He shall visit his home during their bhojan time. When Hemadpant woke up, he could recall every detail of the dream, in an eidetic manner. In these seven years of contact with Sai, meditating with complete discipline, never had  Hemadpant received a message like that from Sai Baba where Baba himself said that he would come to his house to partake a meal. Still, he told his wife about this, asking her to cook extra rice. Hemadpant’s wife was sceptical, wondering why would Sai Baba come to partake their course and basic food in their lowly and inadequate place while having all the options of a luxurious meal anywhere els...

Sai Baba's Story of Grinding Wheat

This is the story about Shirdi Sai Baba's grinding wheat. Grinding of wheat is symbolic of crushing our impulses, desires and ahamkaar; without this there can be no self realisation. Shri Sai Satcharita.- Chapter 1 Hemadpant writes One day I visited the Masjid in Shirdi and I was awed at seeing Sai Baba making preparations for grinding wheat. He set a hand-mill on the floor, took some wheat in a winnowing fan and started grinding. The other people who were present there, and I too, thought ‘Why does Baba need to grind wheat, when he lives on alms?’ However, none had the courage to question Baba. Eventually four courageous female devotees forcibly took the task into their own hands and started singing Baba's Leelas. Seeing their devotion Sai Baba too began to smile. While they were grinding, they thought to themselves that perhaps Baba meant to distribute the flour amongst us, since he himself lives on alms. They finished grinding and began to divide the flour i...
